Made in response to the work in the exhibition, the ambient composition is designed to subtly guide the viewer through the space,?creating an immersive environment. An ultramarine telephone seems to morph and tremble, ready to speak its secrets into someone’s ear. An impossibly large, bright yellow box fan sags under its ridiculous weightor perhaps it contracts itself so that it can blow more air into a room. A new sound piece by Oakland, California musician?Cheflee will accompany Othello’s sculptures. Woody De Othello’s ceramics hover somewhere between animate and inanimate. In addition, many of his new works feature both ears and mouths, offering meditations on listening, hearing, and being present.
These concepts, and the power to deprive people of their breath and their ability to breathe, are now more highly charged. Breath and breathing are ideas often expressed in Othello’s vessel-like forms covered in mouths. His work blends religious and West African folk. Othello draws on African Nkisii, or objects that are believed to be invested with spiritual protection and energy. Egyir is a Ghanaian artist based in Detroit, working in figurative narratives of the African Diaspora. The residency was cut short by several weeks and forced Othello to bring home some of the molds to continue his work. While he was in residence, the world outside the factory began to shift with the beginning of the pandemic.
Othello infuses his work with humor, whimsy, and touches of African Nkisi, a belief system in which spirits inhabit everyday objects. Born and raised in Miami to a family of Haitian descent, Othello is fascinated by African Nkisi, a belief system in which objects are inhabited by spirits.

The stepladder is a positive object, says the artist Woody De. Woody De Othello: Hope Omens presents a series of nearly 20 large anthropomorphic vessels based on African spiritual objects that, among other things, address. Woody De Othello’s Cool Composition is a giant bronze fan, whose anthropomorphism suggests a spectrum of emotional states. Many of the sculptures were produced using molds that Othello created during his Arts/Industry Pottery residency at the Kohler Co. Woody De Othello constructs intentionally wonky, anthropomorphized sculptures of common artifacts of domestic lifetables, radiators, flower vases, lamps, television setsin glazed ceramic, bronze, wood, and glass.
